Aces win Western Canadian midget title
PA Daily Herald Story
August 3
By John MacNeil
The Prince Albert Aces are made of gold.
A month after winning the provincial championship, the Aces captured the Western Canadian midget B girls’ softball crown Monday in Unity, Sask.
And they did so in style, winning three straight games on the final day of the four-day tournament, including a 1-0 victory over the Winnipeg Smitty’s 92s in the final.
Outstanding defence carried the Aces in the playoff round.
“We played errorless ball today,” coach Jenn Ferguson said as the Prince Albertans celebrated Monday afternoon. “No errors — 19 clean innings. It was amazing.
“Lori Earl pitched all 19 innings that we played today. She had a day off (Sunday), so that was good. It worked out.”
In the final, Rae Engele scored the lone run in the third inning. She singled, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on Shanelle Turner’s two-out double.
The Aces kicked off their string of Monday games with a 7-0 win over the Winnipeg Angels in a game reduced to five innings because of the mercy rule. Prince Albert went on to post a 4-1 victory over the Ridge Meadows Rage of British Columbia. The Rage had lost to Winnipeg Smitty’s on Sunday in a one-versus-two playoff game that sent the 92s straight to Monday’s final.
Prince Albert finished round-robin play in fourth place, with a 4-2 record.
“We used our players strategically and got into the playoffs, which was our goal,” said Ferguson, whose Aces opened the nine-team tournament with three games Friday.
“All of the top five teams were close. It could have gone to anyone.”
A rain delay Sunday night forced the Aces into a tight three-game schedule Monday, with starts at 9 a.m., 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
“We really got stronger as the weekend went,” Ferguson said. “We had a very good start, beating the Winnipeg Angels 6-0 in our first game. We scored all six runs in the sixth inning.
“We lost our second game, but (the girls) didn’t give up. They kept playing hard, and we came back in the third game that day and won 6-1 over the host team, Unity.”
The Aces achieved their Saturday goal of going 2-0 and improving to 4-1.That included an extra-inning win over the South Delta (B.C.) Invaders on Saturday night.
“That was probably the turning point of our tournament,” said Ferguson, a teacher at Carlton Comprehensive High School. “We were losing 3-0, and we got two runs in the sixth (inning), and then we went back out on defence in the bottom half of the sixth and made two amazing plays.
“Our second baseman (Lacey Pilon) caught a line drive that she had no business getting to. And then, a ground ball was hit to our third baseman (Brooke Mutch) and it deflected off her glove, right into our (shortstop Turner’s) glove, and she made the out. That seemed to wake us up. We ended up tying it in the seventh and winning it in the eighth.”
In their only game Sunday, the Aces lost to Smitty’s in a morning matchup of the eventual finalists. Prince Albert rested Earl in anticipation of a playoff game Sunday night, but rain halted evening action.
“We ended up losing 2-1 in extra innings,” Ferguson said. “We played phenomenal, and our backup pitcher, Kelsey Rusnell, pitched an amazing game.”
Earl was a strikeout king in her midget swan song, recording four round-robin victories. She added three playoff wins Monday on what was a holiday in name only.
“We were on the ball field from 8 (a.m.) till 2 (p.m.) straight,” Ferguson said after Monday’s marathon.
“What really helped us this morning was that we beat the Angels in five innings, so we had a little bit longer of a rest than we had anticipated. And that was maybe the difference in that last game.”
About half of the 15 players on Prince Albert’s roster are in their final year of midget eligibility.
Two of the graduating Aces, Earl and catcher Megan Bourdon, have more ball in store for this week.
Regina has picked them up for the Canadian junior A women’s championship, which begins today in Saskatoon.

PAMSA wins 3 awards at Softball Sask AGM
October 26, 2009
Prince Albert Three-Time Winner of Softball Saskatchewan Awards
Prince Albert Minor Softball Association (PAMSA) is excited to announce the softball community in Prince Albert was honoured three times this past weekend by Softball Saskatchewan.
PAMSA Executive member, Bruce Vance, was named the Volunteer of the Year at the Softball Saskatchewan annual awards luncheon. Vance is the PAMSA webmaster and tournament coordinator. His other softball volunteer activities this year included coaching a young Pee Wee Aces team to an 18-11-1 record and winning the prestigious Sharon Knopp tournament in Regina. Vance was also involved in coaching Softball Saskatchewan’s Program of Excellence and was the co-chair of the 2009 Midget Boys Canadian Fastpitch Championships.
“Bruce works tirelessly for the softball community in Prince Albert,” says Stephanie Ripplinger, PAMSA president. “We’re all excited that he received this honour” Whether it’s updating the PAMSA website with house league scores, coaching on the diamond, running a minor softball tournament or staging a national event, Bruce meets each challenge with enthusiasm, professionalism and attention to minute details. His overall goals include developing young players, encouraging players to become involved and stay involved in the game and showcasing Prince Albert as one of the premier places to host events.
The accolades don’t end there for Vance. The 2009 Midget Boys Canadian Fastpitch Championships organizing committee in Prince Albert was named Softball Saskatchewan’s Association of the Year. “As co-chair of the event I had the privilege of working with a number of amazing and organized people,” says Vance. “The majority of the committee members have been involved organizing events of this magnitude before,” adds Vance. “They know what they’re doing and know how to make the event a memorable one for all of the athletes, umpires, officials, parents and spectators.” Vance’s co-chair, Jim Bristowe, has been involved with six Canadian Fastpitch championships. “This in an incredible honour for all the committee members involved considering Saskatchewan hosted a number of major softball events this year, including the World Championships in Saskatoon.” continues Vance.
In addition, long-time PAMSA player and umpire, Riley Henderson, received the Ed Mann Memorial Bursary. This recognition is given to those who participate in softball at a grassroots level. Henderson has been involved with softball as a player since he was five and as an umpire since he was 12. In 2009 he played for the Midget Astros. He is also a national level two umpire. Henderson’s future plans include looking at the diamond from a different perspective. “I plan on taking a coaching clinic this year so I can pass on the skills I have obtained from my coaches over the years,” says Henderson.
PAMSA By Law Amendment
At a special meeting of the Prince Albert Minor Softball Association on October 22, 2009 the following amendment to the by laws was passed unanimously by the members present:

2) Any player registering for Prince Albert Minor Softball Association who wants to participate in provincials must play with an ADFO team.
3) Any team using Prince Albert as a "home" would be required to affiliate through Prince Albert Minor Softball Association (PAMSA) and therefore ADFO.
Canada wins double header from Japan at PMP!
From Softball Canada's website (softball.ca):
SMNT - Exhibition Games
Thursday, July 16, 2009
(Prince Albert, SK) - After enduring more than a day of cold, wet weather, the skies cleared and softball fans in Prince Albert were treated to a doubleheader of top level international men’s fastball as Team Canada took on their Japanese counterparts.
A good sized enthusiastic crowd came out to Prime Minister’s Park to see the same teams that battled in the championship game of the Three Nations Challenge that was held last year in Saskatoon .
A nice wrinkle was added to the opening ceremonies when five Japanese exchange students sung their National anthem prior to the game. They would later take turns announcing the Japanese batters. Not to be outdone, a lovely a cappella version of O Canada was performed by a young lady named Cyndal Halcro.
Game 1 - Canada 7, Japan 0
Canada put up a quick three spot in the second inning and never looked back in the opener. Colin Abbott (Portugal Cove, NL) led off by grounding a single to right field. He was immediately followed by Ian Fehrman (Townsend, ON) who did the same thing. Two batters later, Derek Mayson (North Vancouver, BC) turned an 0-2 count into an eight pitch at bat. On that eighth pitch he deposited a three run home run into the parking lot on a hill well beyond the right field fence.
A similar situation would arise in Canada’s half of the third inning when Steve Mullaley (Freshwater, NL) turned around another 0-2 count, lining the ninth pitch of the at bat off the fence in left centre for a two-run double, plating Abbott and Fehrman.
The scoring was capped by an opposite field home run off the bat of left fielder Jeff Ellsworth (St. Lawrence, PEI)
Fehrman, Mayson and Ellsworth would all finish the game two-for-two while Keith Mackintosh (Melfort, SK) would add a single.
The game was called after Japan’s half of the fifth inning due to the run rule.
Trevor Ethier (Saskatoon, SK) went the distance for the victory, allowing only a fourth inning double to Hiroshi Ishimura, striking out six along the way. Kazutaka Murasato took the loss for Japan.
Canada vs. Japan 1: Box Scores
Game 2 - Canada 2, Japan 0
The second game was a much closer contest that featured solid defence and pitching by both squads.
All of the scoring came in the top of the first inning. Centerfielder Ryan Wolfe (Melbourne, ON) led off by grounding a single between third base and shortstop. After retiring the next two Canadian hitters, Japanese starter Kunihiko Iida caught a little bit too much of the plate on an 0-1 pitch to Colin Abbott and Abbott launched it out of the yard in right field.
Nick Underhill (Campbell River, BC) hurled the first four innings for Canada in picking up the win. He gave up two singles, walked two and struck out one in the process. Dean Holoien (Melfort, SK) picked up the save by holding off Team Japan over the final three innings. The only blemish on his record was a sixth inning walk. He struck out four along the way.
Japan used four pitchers in the game with starter Kunihiko Iida giving up both runs over 2 2/3 innings to take the loss.
Wolfe would add a double in the seventh inning. Singles by Jody Eidt (Mitchell, ON) and Rob Giesbrecht (Landmark, MB) would complete the Team Canada hit totals.
Singles by Hiroshi Ishimura and Hiraku Yokoyama were the only hits for Japan.
Canada vs. Japan 2: Box Scores
Canada will open up their part of the ISF competition on Friday evening, July 17 when they take on Argentina immediately following the opening ceremonies at BobVan Impe Stadium.

PA to host 2009 Canadian Midget Boys Championship!
April 24, 2008
Prince Albert Awarded 2009 Midget Boys Canadian Fast Pitch Championships
Prince Albert, Saskatchewan – The Prince Albert Minor Softball Association in association with the Aallcann Development Fastpitch Organization are pleased to announce that the 2009 Midget Boys Canadian Fast Pitch Championships will be hosted at Prime Ministers Park from August 2 – 9, 2009. This will be the fifth time the Midget Boys Canadian Championship tournament has been hosted in Prince Albert after putting on events in 1985, 1996, 2001 and 2006.
“It is an honour for Prince Albert to host another National event”, commented Chairman Bruce Vance. “In 2006 when we hosted, the committee projected the week long event generated over $1.2 million for our city plus we continue to show case our first class facilities and top level local players.”
The Prince Albert Astros will be the host team, and recently secured the services of veteran Head Coach Felix Casavant to lead the team. The Astros roster is made up of players primarily born in 1991 and the nucleus of players have been together, by the time the nationals occur, for the past 8 seasons. This Astros team won a Silver medal in the 2005 Western Canadian Championships they hosted and last summer won Bronze at the Western Canadian Bantam Championships in Saskatoon.
The Host Committee is still in the formative stages, although it is expected many from the 2006 Host Committee will return to similar roles for 2009.
